뉴욕대는 토머스 제퍼슨 대통령 밑에서 재무장관을 지낸 Albert Gallatin에 의해 1831년에 설립되었다. 대학은 "격리된 밀실이 아닌 맥박치는 대도시의 중심에 있어야 한다"는 것이 Gallatin의 신조였다. 뉴욕대의 학부센터는 예술가와 지식인의 동네로 유서깊은 Greenwich Village에 위치하고 있으며, 학생은 수업과 방과활동을 통하여 금융, 문화와 커뮤니케이션의 세계적인 중심인 뉴욕의 생활을 즐길 수 있다.
뉴욕대에서 교양 커리큘럼은 모든 전공분야의 기초가 된다. 최소 128학점을 이수해야 졸업이 가능하다. 대학기는 전통적인 2학기제에 6주간의 여름학기를 포함하고 있다. 일부 분야는 주/야간 및 주말 시간제 프로그램을 제공한다.
뉴욕대의 Bobst 도서관은 세계적인 규모의 개가식 도서관으로 3백만 권의 장서를 보유하고 있으며 서가 길이는 40마일이 넘는다. Bobst 도서관은 그 밖에 Avery R. Fisher Center for Music and Media, 마이크로필름 센터와 유엔 문서고를 갖추고 있다. 뉴욕대는 Bobst 포함 8개 도서관에 총 460만 권의 장서를 소장하고 있다. La Maison Francaise, Deutsches Haus, Lewis L. and Loretta Brennen Glucksman Ireland House, Hagop Kervorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, Casa Italiana, King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center와 Lillian Vernon Center for International Affairs는 다양한 국제 프로그램을 제공한다. 교내 미술관인 Grey Art Gallery and Study Center는 매년 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 6-7회의 전시회를 개최한다. 교내에는 기숙사 21개동이 있으며 약 11,500명의 학부생이 거주하고 있다. 입학지원시 기숙사를 신청한 학생은 학부생활을 하는 동안 기숙사 생활이 보장된다.
