현재의 캠퍼스 부지는 1855년에 Henry Durant 목사가 설립한 College of California가 1866년에 매입했던 것이지만 대학을 건립할 자금이 부족했던 탓에 캘리포니아 주가 운영하던 Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College와 합병하여 University of California가 성립됐고, 초대 총장은 Durant가 맡았다.
