1817년에 설립되었고 1837년에 Ann Arbor로 이전한 Universsity of Michigan at Ann Arbor는 미시간 주에서 가장 오래된 대학이자 University of Michigan 시스템의 중심 캠퍼스다. 학교는 U.S. News & World Report의 2020년 대학 순위에서 5위를 차지했으며, 연구비 지출에서는 정상권에 위치하고 있다. 미시간 대학은 미국 대학 가운데 최초로 세미나 방식 수업을 채택한 것으로 유명하기도 하다. 대학에는 약 600개의 과정에 걸쳐 31,266명의 학부생과 16,824명의 대학원생이 재학중이다. 대학의 도서관 시스템은 24개의 컬렉션을 보유한 19개 도서관으로 이루어져 있으며 796만권의 장서를 보유하고 있다.
