San Francisco Art Institute는 미술활동은 일상의 생활의 연속이며 사고의 한 방법이라는 확고한 주장 아래, Emily Carr, Gottardo Piazzoni, Diego Rivera, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Elmer Bischoff, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown, Jay DeFeo, Wally Hedrick 등의 세계적으로 유명한 미술가들을 배출하며 미술역사의 주역으로 활동하고 있는 미술 디자인 전문 기관이다. 최근에는 New York Times에 의해 “넘치는 정보와 이미지, 조각, 미술 개념들이 만나는 곳에서 자신의 것을 찾으려 애쓰는 미술인에게 학문적 오아시스 또는 think tank와 같은 곳이다.” 라는 평을 들은바 있다.
이 학교는 BFA, MFA, MA degrees, Post-Bac Certificate, Pre-College Summer Program 그리고 Summer MFA Program을 제공하고 있다. 본원은 San Francisco Bay가 내려다 보이는 Russian Hill에 자리하고 있으며, 대학원은 3가에 위치하고 있다. 위에 언급한 바와 같이 미술활동은 좀 더 광범한 범주의 형태와 철학과 미학에 의해 규정되어져야 한다고 가르치며, 순수미술과 응용미술의 영역구분도 불필요한 것으로 간주한다. 학교의 유학생 비율은 10%정도이다.
