뉴욕의 대표적 미술 학교인 SVA는 1947년에 설립된 학교이며, National Association of Schools of Art and Design의 공인된 멤버 기관이고 또한 International Association of Independent School for Art and Design, AIAS의 멤버이기도 하다. 맨해튼 캠퍼스에는 11개의 학부과정에는 3,600 여명 이상의 학생들이 있으며 대학원은 20개 전공이 있으며 700여명의 재학생이 있다. 1,000명 이상의 전문 아티스트와 디자이너로 구성된 교수진들은 이 학교 교육의 핵심을 담당하고 있으며, 철저한 실기위주의 수업으로 전문적인 미술세계를 구축 할 수 있도록 이끌어 주는 미국 내에서 가장 진취 적인 미술가를 배출하는 학교로 유명하다.
SVA는 맨해튼에 위치하고 있으며, 아트와 테크놀러지의 접목과 혁명에 일찍 눈을 돌린 학교답게 15개의 학교 건물은 각종 최신 기자재와 소프트웨어가 채워진
컴퓨터로 가득 메워져 있다.
전반적으로 모든 과목이 강세를 드러내나 Fine Arts, Media Art (Illustration and Cartooning), Interior Design, Computer Art, Photography, 그리고 Film 등은 미국 최강이라 자부하고 있다. 특히 BFA Interior Design 부문은 Foundation for Interior Design Education Research(FIDER)가 공인하는 전문 프로그램이다.
