Pratt은 1887년 뉴욕의 Brooklyn에 설립된 미국 내 가장 큰 규모의 아트 & 디자인 대학이며, 또한 교육자, 역사가, 임상치료사 등을 배출하는 교육기관이기도 하다. 특히 Architecture관련 분야가 강세를 보이는 대학이다. Pratt은 예술적인 관점뿐 아니라 문제해결 능력을 위한 비판적 시각과 역사적인 관점을
함께 가르친다는 교육방침 하에 전체적인 아티스트 및 디자이너 양성을 목표로 삼고있다. 모든 강사진은 현재 활동중인 예술인들로서 실질적 교육에 치중하며, 모든 학생들은 실력 향상은 물론이고 창조력과 전문가로서의 책임감 그리고 사회에 근본적으로 기여하는 방법도 배운다.
Pratt은 해마다 10위권 안에 드는 우수 미술대학중의 하나이며, 외국인의 입학이 비교적 쉬운 학교로 알려져 있다. 흑인 밀집지역에 위치하고 있다는 이유로 우리나라 학생들이 지원을 기피하는 경향이 있으나, 94년 완공된 최신식 기숙사를 비롯해 학교 주변환경이 안정적이고 인근 뉴져지나 멘하탄 등에서도 등교가 수월하므로 지리적인 여건 때문에 지원을 기피할 필요는 없다.
