1764년에 아메리카 식민지 의회의 헌장에 따라 설립된 브라운 대학은 200년 이상의 역사를 자랑한다.
1891년에는 여자대학이 설립되었고, 현재는 남녀공학이다. 재학생은 10,239명 이상으로, 약 7,043명은 학부생이다. 브라운 대학 재학생은 다양한 개성을 가지고 있지만, 교육 과정과 그 품질에 깊은 관심을 가지고 있고 참여정신이 강하다는 공통점이 있다. 대학이 위치한 Providence는 지역활동에 참여할 수 있을만큼 작은 도시이면서 다양한 문화시설과 좋은 교통시설을 갖추고 있다.
브라운 대학의 교육은 개별 학생의 요구와 목표에 맞춰져 있다. 커리큘럼에는 필수 분야가 정해져 있지 않기 때문에 계획에 따라 자신에게 적합한 학업 계획을 짜는 것은 학생의 책임이다.
학생은 최대 40개의 학기 과정을 이수할 수 있고, 최소 30개 학기 과정을 이수해야 졸업이 가능하다. 성적은 ABC/낙제 또는 통과/낙제 두 가지 방식으로 평가되는데, 낙제 과목은 성적표에 표시되지 않는다. 학생은 집중과목을 수료해야 졸업이 가능한데, 이를 통해서 정해진 분야에 대한 심도깊은 공부가 가능하다. Advanced Placement는 물론 개인 연구나 우등 과정을 통해 학점을 얻을 수도 있다. 브라운 대학은 2학기제를 채택하고 있으며, 학기는 9월 초-12월 중순과 1월 말-5월 중순이다.
브라운 대학의 캠퍼스는 약 140에이커 규모의 부지에 50개 이상의 건물로 구성되어 있다. 대학 도서관은 500만 권 이상의 장서를 소장하고 있다. 대학은 학부와 대학원 과정은 물론 연구를 위한 다양한 현대적인 연구실과 컴퓨터 시설을 갖추고 있으며, The Performing Arts Complex, the Catherine Bryan Dill Center for the Performing Arts, includes the Leeds Theater, the Stuart Theater와 the Ashamu Dance Studio 등의 문화시설도 보유하고 있다.
