그리넬은 교수와 학생 일대일의 적극적인 학습을 강조하고 있다. 학교는 엄격한 학업과정과 폭넓은 방과 프로그램을 자랑한다. 탐구 방법, 비평적 분석과 작문 기법을 강조하는 세미나 방식의 신입생 교습을 제외하면 핵심 필수과목은 없다. 졸업에는 전공 분야 32학점 등 총 124학점이 필요한데, 학과당 학점 한계는 48학점, 단과당 한계는 92학점이다. 인문학, 예술, 사회과학과 자연과학 분야에서는 독자 연구가 가능하다.
학사년도는 8월 말에서 5월 중순까지 2학기로 구성되어 있으며, 학생은 학기당 평군 16학점을 이수한다.
