버지니아 대학은 미국 건국의 주요 인물인 토머스 제퍼슨이 1819년에 설립한 대학으로, 그리스/로마의 고전 양식을 대학 건물에 구현한 "제퍼슨 양식"으로 미국의 대학으로는 유일하게 유네스코 세계문화 유산에 선정된 곳이기도 하다. 대학은 건축, 천문학, 철학 등 오늘날에는 보편화된 전문 분야를 미국 최초로 제공한 것으로도 유명하다. 대학은 1993년 이래 여덟 차례 U.S. News and World Report의 대학 순위에서 공립 대학 가운데 1위에 올랐다.
버지니아 대학의 도서관 시스템은 총 500만 권의 장서를 보유하고 있다. 1992년에 설치된 전자 텍스트 센터는 70,000권의 전자책과 350,000개의 이미지를 보유하여 세계 최대의 보유량을 자랑한다. 교내에는 대규모 전파망원경 집단을 운영하는 국립전파 천문대 본부도 설치되어 있다.
