메릴랜드 대학은 150년 동안 최고 수준의 학부 교육을 제공하는 동시에 연구 대학으로도 명성을 쌓아 왔다. 메릴랜드 주를 대표하는 이 대학은 100가지 이상의 학업 프로그램을 갖추고 있으며 학부생 30,511명과 대학원생 10,489명이 재학중이다. 학교는 워싱턴 DC로부터 몇 분 거리에 위치해 있기 때문에 워싱턴 DC의 다양한 기관 및 문화시설을 활용할 수 있다. 재학생은 케네디 센터, NASA, 스미소니언 박물관, 미 국립 보건원, EPA, CNN, FBI, 워싱턴 포스트 등의 다양한 기관에서 인턴, 연구 프로젝트 및 취직 기회를 얻을 수 있다. 대학이 위치한 College Park는 학생들을 위해 설계된 진정한 대학도시이기도 하다.
학부생은 120학점을 취득해야 학위를 취득할 수 있는데, 그 가운데 46학점은 일반교육 또는 CORE 과정이다. CORE 과정은 학생이 삶에서 대면할 문제를 지적으로 종합화하고 인식할 수 있도록 돕는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다.
전공 과목은 30에서 36학점이 할당되어 있으며, 이중전공과 부전공은 물론 AP나 IB를 통한 학점 취득도 가능하다. Univiersity Honors 프로그램은 소규모의 세미나와 단체활동을 통해 학생과 교수진이 결합을 이루는 기회를 제공한다. 성적 우수생에게 제공되는 College Park Scholas 프로그램은 학업과 공동생활을 결합판 프로그램이다. 다른 특수 프로그램으로 First Year Learning Communities, Gemstone, Honors Humanities, CIVICUS, Global Communities, Jimenez-Porter Writer"s House, 공군 ROTC 및 연구조교 프로그램 등이 있다. 대학은 학기제를 채택하고 있으며, 여름 6주및 겨울 3주의 스케줄이 있다.
메릴랜드 대학의 캠퍼스는 1,500에이커 규모로, 연구소, 공연시설, 미술관과 학습센터 등 300개 이상의 건물이 들어서 있다. 주요 시설로는 National Archives II, Academy of Leadership, Center for Agricultural Biotechnology, Astronomy Observatory, Center for Young Children, Center of Entrepreneurship, Engineering Wind Tunnel, Fire and Rescue Institute, Institute for Systems Research, Performing Arts Center, Space Systems Laboratory와 Superconductivity Research Center 등이 있다. 교내에는 학부생 10,000명 이상이 거주하고 있는데, 주거 종류는 전통적인 기숙사에서 주방이 딸린 아파트까지 다양하고 1인실에서 관심분야에 따른 숙사까지 형태도 다양하다. 10개 노선의 대학 셔틀 버스가 운행되어 통학이 용이하고 지역 주민 및 학생을 위한 주차공간도 충분하다.
