1861년 설립된 연구 중심의 명문 주립대학교로 미국 북서부 지역에서 가장 큰 대학이면서 가장 오래된 대학이다. 특히 의학, 바이오공학, 컴퓨터공학, 경영학 분야의 명성이 높다. 현재 문리대학, 법과대학, 경영대학, 교육대학, 정보대학, 약학대학, 환경대학, 건축환경대학, 공과대학, 의과대학, 치과대학, 간호대학, 공공정책대학, 공중보건대학, 사회복지대학 등 16개 대학 및 대학원으로 구성되어 있으며, 다양한 학과와 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. Seattle에 있는 Main Campus를 포함하여 Tacoma와 Bothell에도 캠퍼스가 있고 별도의 Medical center와 4개의 병원을 운영하고 있다. 특히 의과대학 부설 메디컬센터는 US News & World Report 미국 상위 10개 병원의 하나로 선정되었으며 미국대학협회(AAU)의 일원이다.
학부생 31,063명이 재학 중이며 일본계 미국 건축가 Minoru Yamasaki, 배스킨라빈스 공동창업자 Irv Robbins, 마이스페이스 공동창업자 Chris DeWolfe, 퓰리처상 수상작가 Marilynne Robinson등이 있다.
