1900년에 강철왕 앤드류 카네기가 설립한 카네기 멜론 대학은 미국 대학 순위 25위권안에 줄곧 그 이름을 올리고 있는 명문 대학이다. 카네기 멜론은 좌뇌와 우뇌의 사고가 통합되는 협동적인 문화로 유명하다. 학생은 문제 해결법, 비판적인 사고력과 창조적이고 정량적인 기량을 연마하면서 폭넓은 지식의 세계에 접하게 된다. 학교는 피츠버그 도심에서 5마일 거리인 Oakland 지역에 위치해 있어서 교외적인 분위기의 캠퍼스를 자랑하지만 피츠버그의 대도시 문화를 고루 즐길 수 있다. 카네기 멜론에는 핵심 커리큘럼이 없고, Computer Skills Workshop과 신입생 작문 과정만 필수다. 카네기 멜론의 학생은 전공과 분야를 초월하는 학업 계획을 짤 수 있으므로 공학대생이 이중전공으로 음악을 선택하거나 영어 전공 학생이 부전공으로 경영을 선택할 수도 있다.
학생은 빠르면 1학년 2학기부터 연구 활동에 참여할 수 있고, 많은 학과들은 학기중과 여름에 연구 훈련과정과 연구 프로그램을 제공한다. 카네기 멜론의 Small Undergraduate Research Grant 프로그램에 따라 학생은 그룹 연구, 교수와 함께하는 개별 연구는 물론 독자적인 연구를 진행할 수 있다.
카네기 멜론의 103에이커 규모 캠퍼스는 피츠버그 도심에 인접해 있으며, 50동 이상의 건물과 3개 도서관이 들어서 있다. Hunt, Engineering and Science와 Mellon Institute 도서관은 906,000권의 장서와 3,889종의 정기간행물을 소장하고 있다. 무선 네트웍이 교내 전역에 설치되어 있으며, 기숙사를 비롯한 캠퍼스의 모든 컴퓨터는 교내 네트웍인 Andrew에 연결되어 있다. 교내에는 교육/연구시설 외에도 식당 및 오락시설을 갖춘 University Center, 역사적인 Kresge Theater for Performing Arts를 비롯한 각종 문화 체육시설이 있다. 5,200명의 재학생 가운데 약 80퍼센트는 대학 기숙사에 거주한다.
