1905년도에 설립되었으며, 그 명성은 따로 설명하지 않아도 될 정도의 학교이다. 전체의 30% 유학생비율을 가지며, 아시안계 학생이 29%를 차지한다.
수 년전부터 아이비 리그 대학인 콜럼비아와 상호 학점 인정제도를 운영하며 교양과목 교육을 보충하고 있으며, 기타 연주등에서 5년 만에 석사를 마치는 프로그램등을 만들고 있다.
모든 분야에서 공개 실기테스트를 통해 합격자를 선발하며, 영어, 에세이도 주요 선발요인이 된다.
쥴리어드는 음악, 드라마, 무용 전공의 예술학교로 미국 굴지의 학교여서 경쟁률이 매우 치열하다. 지원자의 약 20%가 합격하고 있는 실정이다. 플룻 같은 경우 100명 지원에 4명 합격생의 전례를 갖기도 했다. 기숙사 시설은 수용인원의 제한으로 불만사항으로 꼽히며, 유학생들은 주로 학교가 임대한 Narragansett 호텔등에서 주로 지내고 있다.
무용과 연극의 전공이 세분화 되어 있지 않은 반면, 음악 분야는 전공 분야별 학과로 나뉜다. 크게 오케스트라를 구성하기 위한 모든 악기와 피아노, 오폐라, 가곡등 종합예술학교로서 모습을 갖추고 있다.
줄리아드는 1999년도 입학생부터 토플외 TWE 점수까지 의무적으로 제출하도록 하고 있다.

Standardized Tests
Juilliard does not require the SAT I, SAT II, or ACT tests. However, applicants for whom English is not the native language may submit SAT I or ACT scores in lieu of the TOEFL to demonstrate English Language Proficiency (see here for further instructions).

오디션

외국 학생들도 자국민과 마찬가지로 미국내 오디션을 받는다. 오디션 기간동안 토플점수또한 제출을 해야 하는데 토플이 없는 경우 영어시험을 통한 조건부 입학여부를 결정받는다. 오디션은 2월, 3월에 본교에서 열린다.
