뉴욕 멘하탄 중심에 위치하고 있는 FIT는 공립 고등교육기관으로서 사립인 Parsons와
함께 미국의 패션산업을 이끄는 양대 축의 하나이다. 특히 여러 패션/미술관련 산업체와
연계가 잘 되어 있어 학생들에게 높은 취업률 뿐 아니라 많은 이점을 제공을 하고 있으며,
뉴욕이라는 도시의 활력과 세련된 예술적 감각을 환경으로부터 배울 수 있는 곳이기도 하다.
FIT는 미술의 상업성과 예술성의 경계를 넘나들며, Design, Fine Arts, Packaging,
Computer Animation 등의 분야에서 세계적으로 성공적인 인재를 배출하고 있으며,
또한 미술에 Technology, Marketing, Advertising, Merchandising 그리고
Production 등을 접목시키며 예술의 경영과 세계화에 막대한 영향력을 불어넣고 있다.

F.I.T는 특히 주립인 관계로 학비가 저렴할 뿐 아니라 대학이 제공하는 다양한 학제와 전공분야 때문에 최근에는 Parsons 보다 더 선호되어지고 있다. FIT가 갖고 있는 독특한 전공분야로는 Display & Exhibit Design, Fur Design, Men’s Wears, Toy Design 등이 있으며, Jewelry, Fashion, Advertising, Buying & Merchandising 분야도 최우수 학과에 속하고 있고 Advertising Photography도 유명하다.

원서를 접수하게 되면 해당 학과에서 요구하는portfolio
양식설명서가 학생에게 우편으로 배달된다. 사진이나 슬라이드 양식을 요구하게
되는데, portfolio cases or video cassettes,
sculpture, CD's, sketchbooks, framed canvas
paintings, or "3-D" items 등의 양식은
우편으로 접수하지 않으니 유의하여야 한다.
포트폴리오 작품 제출규격은 Color copies, 8-1/2x11 inches
/ 21x28 cm 을 추천하며, Fashion Design 전공 지원학생의
경우에는 8-1/2x11 inches / 21x28 cm의 규격양식을 따라야
한다. Artwork 는 11x14 inches / 27x35 cm 보다
커서는 안되고, 사진과 슬라이드는 슬라이드용 투명 폴더에 담겨있어야 한다.
각각의 작품마다 학생 이름, 주소를 기입하고 전체작품의 description
list를 첨부해야 한다. 이러한 일반 규정 외에 전공별로 요구하는 내용이
조금씩 틀리므로 원서접수 후 받게 되는 portfolio 제출양식 설명서를
반드시 참조하여야 한다.
<전공별 세부사항>
Accessories Design
- Fashion 관련된 작품 Slides 허용
- 지원자의 creativity and sense of design이 보여야
함
- Drawing test가 있음
Advertising Design
- 형식의 제한 없이 12-15 점의 최근 작품으로 advertising
or graphic design과 관련이 없어도 됨
- 지원자의 imagination, ability to draw, design
skills, sense of color, use of typography가
잘 나타나야 함
- Sketchbooks와 computer design samples이
있어야 함
- Home Test로써 평가 시 short drawing test 가
있음
Display & Exhibit
Design
- artistic ability, creativity, design sense,
and sensitivity to color, line, proportion이
잘 나타나는 작품, 그리고 drawings (ground plans, perspective
drawings, sketches, photographs, paintings,
and collages)가 포함 되야 함
- 평가는 엄격한 기준보다는 작품의 창조성, 다양성 그리고 흥미로움을 바탕으로
한다.
Fashion Design
- Home design test 와 portfolio requirements가
우편으로 발송됨
- Home design test 는 4 점의 특정한 fashion sketches을
요구하고, 그 외 6-10 점의 fashion sketches를 더 요구함.
또한 지원자가 창작한 바느질로 된 garments의 사진들을 제출해야 함
- sketches의 크기는 11x14 inches / 27x35 centimeters
보다 작게. Color copies 가 권장됨. Slides 는 권장되지
않음.
- 평가는 creativity, design sense, and technical
skills에 기본을 둠.
Fine Arts
- 작품 형식의 제한이 없이 15 점 정도
- Portfolio는 creativity and drawing skills을
보여줘야 함.
- Sketchbooks 권장
Illustration
- 작품 형식의 제한이 없이 10-15 점의 original 작품으로 portraits,
situations, environments, still life을 포함
- Sketchbooks 권장 / drawing test가 평가 시 주어짐
Interior Design
- 12-24 점의 작품으로 지원자의 artistic ability, creativity,
design sense, and sensitivity to color,
line, proportion 을 보이는 작품들
- Sketchbooks 권장
- 평가 시 구성과 깨끗함이 고려됨
- Home test로drawing test가 평가 시 주어짐
Jewelry Design
- Drawing or sculpture가 포함된 작품
- 평가는 sense of color and design과 세부성이 고려
됨
- Jewelry가 필요하지는 않으나 포함될 수 있음
- 작품의 사진이 허용 됨
Menswear Design
- 지원자의 창의성을 보이는 8-10 점의 original sketches
- Suits, sports coats, knitwear, sportswear,
active sportswear, formal wear, casual wear,
headwear, and/or accessories에서 2 가지 이상 포함되어야
함
Photography
- 15-20 점의 작품으로 sensitivity to design, imagination,
style, diverse subject matters, 창의적 실험성
등을 보여야 함
- Fashion 또는 advertising과 관련 없어도 되나 개인의
흥미와 깨끗함, 신중함을 보여야 함
Textile/Surface Design
- Original 작품이 15 점 정도의 hand-painted 또는
screened fabrics, weaving, and fiber art가
포함 되야 함
- Drawing 그리고 painting ability, creativity,
color and design sense가 보여야 함
- Sketchbooks, photos, 또는 slides of large
paintings and three-dimensional work가 허용
됨
- Short drawing test 가 평가 시 주어짐
