Haverford 칼리지는 퀘이커교도가 만든 첫 대학으로, 1833년에 설립되었다. 204에이커 규모의 캠퍼스는 필라델피아 서부 10마일 거리에 위치하여, 대도시의 문화 시설을 활용할 수 있는 환경을 자랑한다.

Haverford의 학생은 교수의 조언을 받으면서 자신의 학업 프로그램을 계획하게 된다. 인문학, 사회과학과 자연과학의 3개 분야에서 최소한 세 개의 과정을 이수해야 하며, 외국어, 사회 정의 와 작문 3개 분야의 요구사항을 충족해야 한다. 학생은 2학년 말에 전공을 선택하게 되며, 학기당 보통 4개 과정을 이수하고 4년간 32개 과정을 이수하게 된다.

대학은 Bryn Mawr 칼리지와 긴밀한 교류 관계를 맺고 있으며, 인근의 Swarthmore 칼리지와 함께 Tri-college 컨소시엄을 구성하여 도서관 등의 시설을 공유하고 있다.

교내 주요 시설로는 James P. Magill 도서관(장서 445,000권), 컴퓨터 센터, Koshland 통합 자연과학 센터, Strawbridge 천문대, 음악 센터, Gest 종교 다문화 연구 센터, 미술 센터, Marshall 강당, 언어 학습 센터 등이 있다. 대학은 기숙 캠퍼스로 이루어져, 학생 98퍼센트와 교수진 50퍼센트가 교내에 거주한다. 기숙사는 4인실, 다인실과 독실 등 다양한 형태가 있다.
