University of Wisconsin-Madison은 위스콘신주 매디슨에 위치한 공립연구대학으로
1848년에 설립되었다. 재학생은 총 41,000명에 학부생이 29,000명으로, 이는 학생 수로
미국에서 10위 규모다. 대학은 U.S. News and World Report가 집계한 2006년 대학순위에서
34위를 차지했으며, 공립대학으로서 아이비리그에 비견할만한 교육환경을 제공하는
"public Ivies"를 구성하는 학교로도 알려져 있다.
위스콘신 대학 시스템의 중심 캠퍼스인 이 대학은 20개 단과대학과 전문대학원으로 구성되어
있는데, 경영, 공학, 교욱, 농학, 문리대와 같은 일반적인 학부외에도 법학, 의학, 수의학, 환경학,
도시/지역계획과 약각 전문 대학원을 보유하고 있다. 최대 단과대학인 College of Arts and
Letters에는 전체 학부생의 절반 가량이 재학하고 있으며, 39개 학과와 5개 전문대학원이
설치되어 있다.
대학 캠퍼스의 면적은 933에이커지만, 연구시설과 기타 부지를 합친 면적은 10,600에이커에 달한다.
도서관은 장서 730만 권과 정기간행물 55,000종, 마이크로필름 620만 개 등을 소장하고 있으며,
연구 도서관으로는 미국에서 11위 규모다. 전시시설로는 지질학 박물관과 미술관이 있다. |
