Cornelius Vanderbilt 장군은 1873년에 100만 달러를 기부하여 밴더필트 대학을 설립하면서 "우리나라 모든 분야에 존재해야 할 유대를 강화하는 데 공헌한다"는 건학이념을 밝혔다. 대학은 테네시 주의 주도로 인구 100만 명의 대도시인 내시빌에 위치하고 있다. 규모는 중급으로, 4개 단과대학과 6개 대학원 및 전문학교로 구성되어 있다. 재학생은 총 10,300명으로 그 가운데 6,300명이 학부생이다. 밴더빌트 대학은 8월 말에 개시하는 2학기제를 채택하고 있다. 학부생은 College of Arts and Science, School of Engineering, Peabody College (education and human development), 또는 Blair School of Music에 직접 지원하게 된다. College of Arts and Science에서는 다양한 분야의 학문을 경험할 수 있다.

학생은 교내 교양교육 프로그램의 기준에 따라 작문, 수학, 외국어, 인문학, 자연과학, 사회과학, 역사 및 문야에 걸쳐 자신의 실력을 쌓게 된다. Blair School of Music은 오케스트라의 각 악기는 물론 피아노, 오르간, 색소폰, 기타와 성악을 다루며, 교양전공 1개, 부전공 2개와 함께 다양한 과정과 개인교습 및 비전공자를 위한 악단을 제공한다. School of Engineering은 공학 관련 과정과 함께 영어, 인문학, 사회과학 관련 수업을 필수적으로 이수하게 하고 있다. Peabody College는 교사 자격증 관련 과정과 함께 기타 교육분야, 아동 발달, 인지 연구, 인간/조직 발달 등의 영역을 포괄하고 있다. 재학생은 커뮤니케이션, 인문학, 수학, 자연과학과 사회과학 관련 필수학점을 이수해야 한다.

밴더빌트 대학의 도서관 시스템은 Jean and Alexander Heard Library를 중심으로 특별 소장품과 대학 기록고를 포함한 9개 자료센터로 이루어져 있으며, 총 230만 권 이상의 장서를 보유하고 있다. 대학 캠퍼스의 면적은 300에이커로, 학부생 가운데 87퍼센트가 교내에 거주한다. 일반 기숙사, 아파트, 다인실 등의 다양한 주거시설이 있으며, 외국어에 관심을 가진 학생을 위한 McTyeire International House도 있다.
