1865년에 Ezra Cornell과 Andrew Dickson White가 공동으로 설립한 코넬 대학은 고전에서 과학까지, 이론에서 실용까지를 포괄하는 지식의 모든 분야를 가르친다는 당시로서는 특이한 목표를 가지고 있었다. 이러한 이상은 학교의 교훈인 에즈라 코넬의 경구 "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study"에서도 잘 나타난다. 오늘날에도 대학은 아이비 리그 대학 가운데 가장 규모가 크고 가장 폭넓은 교육을 제공하고 있다. 코넬 대학에 속한 14개 단과 대학과 전문 대학원은 거의 모든 학문 분야를 포괄하고 있으며, 수많은 다학제 프로그램을 통해 기존 학과의 경계를 뛰어넘는 기회를 제공한다. 노벨상과 퓰리처상 등을 수상한 뛰어난 교수진은 전공 분야는 물론 입문 및 교양 수업에서도 접할 수 있다. 코넬의 재학생은 20,000명 이상이고 그 가운데 13,600명이 학부생이다.

코넬의 학위과정 요구사항은 단과대학마다 다르지만, 다른 분야의 과정 이수가 권장되고 있다. 아프리카인, 아시아인, 아시아계 미국인, 라티노, 라틴계 미국인과 미국 원주민을 연구하는 코넬의 민족 연구 프로그램은 다학제적 연구의 전형적인 사례로서 미국 전역에 잘 알려져 있다. 이 프로그램은 학과과정 외에도 각종 강의, 회의, 세미나, 전시회, 출판물 간행과 연구 프로젝트 등으로 대학내에서의 다문화적 이해도를 높이는 역할을 하고 있다. 여러 과정은 우등 프로그램, 독자 전공, 이중 전공 및 복수 전공 프로그램도 제공한다. 신입생은 AP 또는 학과 추천을 통해 학점을 취득할 수도 있다. 코넬은 2학기제를 채택하고 있으며 여름 세션은 3회 연속 제공된다.

코넬의 도서관 시스템은 세계 10위의 규모를 자랑한다. 710만 권 이상의 장서와 65,000종의 정기간행물을 보유하고 있으며, 매년 13만 권의 장서가 추가되고 있다. Cornell Information Technologies는 공용 터미널과 마이크로컴퓨터를 운용하고 문서를 제작하며 다양한 교육 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 학교에는 일반 기숙사는 물론 학생 가족을 위한 400개 이상의 아파트와 다양한 숙소를 제공하고 있으며, 모든 기숙사는 인터넷으로 연결되어 있다.
