스탠포드 대학은 1885년에 사업가로서 캘리포니아 주지사와 연방 상원의원을 역임한 Leland와
Jane Stanford가 설립하였으며, 원래 명칭은 Leland Stanford Junior University다.
Leland는 유럽의 명문 대학을 참고하여 대학 건물을 건축하는 동시에 학생들에게 폭넓은
교양 교육을 제공하기를 원했다. 그 결과 성립된 커리큘럼은 상상력을 배양하고
개성을 계발한다는 점에서 당시로서는 특기할 만한 것이었다. 스탠포드는 Palo Alto와
Menlo Park의 교외에 위치하고 있으며, 샌프란시스코 남쪽 30마일 거리에 있다.
스탠포드는 학부생이 인류 문명에 대한 지식과 인식도를 넓힐 수 있는 교양 교육을 제공한다.

커리큘럼도 유연하게 계획할 수 있어서, 일반 전공 외에도 학/석사과정을 포괄하는 이중전공, 개인학습 및 우등 프로그램 등을 제공한다. 학부생은 첫 2년동안 Stanford Introductory Studies를 통하여 교수진과의 관계를 증진하고, 2학년 말까지는 전공을 결정한다. 학위를 획득하기 위해서는 180학점을 이수하는 동시에 작문, 일반교육과 필수 외국어를 이수해야 한다. 모든 학생은 3/4분기의 인문학 입문과정과 함께 Disciplinary Breadth 항목의 5개 과정과 Education for Citizenshop 항목의 2개 과정을 이수해야 한다. 학점 교류도 가능하지만 최소 45학점은 스탠포드에서 이수해야 하며, 타 학교에서 이수한 학점은 최대 90학점까지만 인정된다. AP나 IB를 통해서는 최대 45학점을 인정받을 수 있다.

스탠포드는 중규모의 대학이지만 부지면적이 8,180에이커를 넘는 캠퍼스를 자랑하며, 학부생은 약 6,800명, 대학원생은 8,000명이다. 스탠포드 도서관은 총 800만권 이상의 장서를 보유하고 있고, 학부 도서관은 100종에 육박하는 외국어에 대한 자료를 보유한 외국어 도서관을 갖추고 있다. 기숙사는 총 76개동이 있으며, 신입생은 기숙사 입주가 필수다.
