1751년에 개교한 펜실베이니아 대학은 미국에서 네 번째로 오래된 고등교육기관이자
미국 최초의 대학교로 알려져 있다. 미국 독립선언문 서명자 9명과 헌법 서명자 11명이
이 대학과 연관이 있으며, 대학의 설립자는 미국 건국을 주도한 인물인 벤자민 프랭클린이다.
펜실베이니아 대학은 유럽의 사례를 따라 다학제 모델을 따른 미국 최초의 교육기관 가운데 하나다.
대학 캠퍼스는 268에이커 규모로 필라델피아 서부의 University City 지구에 위치하고 있다.
재학중인 학부생과 대학원생은 각각 10,000명 정도이고, 교수는 약 4,500명이다.

대학은 The College of Arts & Sciences, The School of Engineering and Applied Science, The School of Nursing과 Wharton School의 4개 학부로 구성되어 있다. 펜실베이니아 대학은 다학제 학습과 연구에 중점을 두고 있으며 학제도 최대한의 유연성을 보장한다. 두 개의 단과대학이 공동으로 졸업 기준을 충족시키는 학생에게 2개의 학위를 수여하는 공동학위 프로그램 4개가 있고, 학생이 독자적으로 이중 학위 취득도 가능하다. 학교의 One University 정책에 따라 학부생은 단과대학 및 대학원의 모든 과정을 수강할 수 있다. 재학생은 Swarthmore, Haverford와 Bryn Mawr 등, Quaker 컨소시엄에 참가하는 지역 학교에서도 수강이 가능하다.
대학 도서관 시스템은 15개 도서관으로 이루어져 있으며, 장서 570만 권, 44,000종의 정기간행물을 소장하고 있다. 대학 박물관은 이집트, 메소포타미아, 아프리카, 동아시아와 남미의 중요 유물을 소장하고 있으며, 현대미술관에서는 연중 각종 전시회를 개최하고 있다. |
