콜럼비아 대학의 School of General Studies (GS)는 아이비리그 대학으로서는 독특하게, 비정규 교육을 받은 학생을 대상으로 한 교양 과정 대학이다. 개인 사정때문에 교육을 중단했거나 대학에 입학하지 못했거나 시간제 과정 이수만 가능한 학생들이 GS 재학생의 대부분이다. 이러한 특성에도 불구하고 GS 재학생은 일반 학부생과 동일한 수업을 받고 동일한 학위를 수여받을 수 있다. GS 재학생은 약 1,200명의 학사과정 학생과 400명의 의예과 학생으로 구성되어 있다. 콜럼비아 대학은 맨해튼 북서부의 Morningside Heights에 위치해 있는데, 인근에는 Union Theological Seminary, Jewish Theological Seminary, Manhattan School of Music, St. Luke’s Hospital, Women’s Hospital, Riverside Church와 Cathedral of St. John the Divine 등의 학교 및 기관이 있어서 풍부한 지적활동과 사교활동을 경험할 수 있다.

GS의 교양교육은 학생이 졸업한 뒤에도 학습과 성장을 계속할 수 있도록 지식과 능력을 북돋우는 것은 물론 직업상 중책을 맡을 수 있는 기반을 다지는 역할을 하도록 계획되어 있다. 졸업을 위해서는 핵심 필수과목, 전공 필수과목 및 선택과목을 이수해야 하는데, 핵심 필수과목은 작문과 커뮤니케이션을 명료하게 수행하고 인문학, 사회과학, 과학에 걸친 기본개념을 이해하며 문학, 미술, 음악의 주요 개념에 익숙해지는 것은 물론 외국어를 능숙하게 사용할 수 있는 것을 목표로 한다. 전공 필수 과목은 학생의 관심 분야에 대한 지식를 지속적으로 습득할 수 있도록 계획되어 있으며, 선택 과목은 학생의 지적 성장이나 장래의 목표에 관련된 분야에 대해 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 최소 124학점을 얻어야 학사학위 취득이 가능한데, 최대 60학점까지 인정을 받을 수 있지만 64학점 이상은 콜럼비아 대학에서 취득해야 한다.

콜럼비아 대학 도서관은 미국 6위 규모의 대학도서관으로 총 860만 권의 장서, 500만 개 이상의 마이크로필름 및 850개 컬렉션으로 이루어진 2600만 본 이상의 필사본을 소장하고 있다. 교내 도서관 시스템은 25개 도서관으로 구성되어 있는데, 5개는 전문 도서관이다. 대학 컴퓨터 센터는 세계적인 규모를 자랑하며, Fairchild Life Sciences Building은 연구실, 전자현미경 등 대규모의 교육 및 연구용 생화학 관련 설비를 갖추고 있다. 대학의 물리학 센터는 레이저의 발명과 최초의 핵분열 시험 등 과학 분야의 중요한 업적이 이루어진 장소다.
