1955년에 설립된 하비 머드 칼리지는 수학, 과학과 공학을 중심으로 엄격한 학문 환경에서 학생을 교육하는 동시에 인문학과 사회과학에 걸쳐 풍부한 교양 지식을 제공하는 것을 사명으로 하고 있다. 재학생은 약 893명 정도이며, 대학은 지역 대학의 연합체인 Claremont Colleges 컨소시엄 소속으로, 재학생은 컨소시엄 소속 타 대학에서 수강이 가능하다.
하비 머드는 학부과정 대학에 걸맞게 소규모의 대화식 수업을 지향한다. 학생은 전체 이수 과정 가운데 1/3을 수학, 물리학, 화학, 생물학, 전산학과 공학 설계 등의 공통 기술 핵심 커리큘럼으로 이수하고, 1/3을 인문학과 사회과학 과정으로 이수한다. 나머지 1/3이 전공 과정으로, 전공은 2학년 중반 이후에 선택하게 된다.
