뉴올리언즈의 Tulane 대학은 국내외에 걸쳐 명성을 쌓은 대학으로, 1834년에 루이지애나 의학대학으로 개교했고 1884년에 현재의 이름으로 개칭했다. 대학은 교양에서 과학까지 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 법학, 의학, 경영, 공학, 건축, 사회사업, 공중보건과 열대의학 등의 전문대학원을 갖추고 있으며, 14,062명 이상의 학생이 11개 단과대학과 대학원에 재학중이다. 학부생은 약 7,207명으로, 교양/과학대학, 공학대학, 건축대학, 경영대학, 공중보건대학과 단과대학의 전공 70가지 이상을 선택할 수 있다.
신입생은 교양, 과학과 공학, 경영, 공중보건과 열대의학 및 건축을 포괄하는 Undergraduate College에 입학하게 된다. Tulane은 2학기제를 채택고 있으며, 1학기 기말고사는 연말 휴무 전에 치러진다.
학생은 지도교수와 상의하여 과목 선택 및 전공 계획을 할 수도 있지만, Tulane University Center for Academic Advising을 통하여 학업 계획을 수립할 수 있다. 대학의 핵심 커리큘럼은 작문, 외국어, 과학탐구, 문화적 지식, 다학제연구 등의 과정을 통하여 학부생의 기초 소양을 다지게 한다. 신입생은 TIDES 과정을 통하여 세미나 경험을 쌓을 수도 있다. 학부생은 또한 전공에 관련된 Senior Capstone Experience를 수료해야 하는데, 이를 통해서는 전공과 기타 학업에서 쌓은 지식과 기량을 프로젝트에 투입하게 된다.
Tulane 대학의 도서관 시스템은 미국 100위권 안에 드는 규모다. 200만 권 이상의 장서를 소장하고 있으며, William Ransom Hogan 재즈 문서고, Newcomb College Center for Research Women과, 미국 소수인종 및 민권운동 관련 자료를 소장하고 있는 Amistad Research Center 등이 속해 있다. 다른 연구시설로는 Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies와 Murphy Institute for Political Economy 등이 있다. Newcomb Gallery는 학생/교수 작품전을 비롯한 다양한 전시회를 열며, 최신 컴퓨터 시설과 광케이블 네트웍도 갖추어져 있다. 대학 기숙사는 뉴올리언즈에서 4마일 거리에 위치하고 있으며 신입생은 의무적으로 기숙사 생활을 하게 된다. 우등생, 국제문제 및 도시문제, 여성과학 전공 등의 관심사에 따라 숙사를 선택할 수도 있다. 캠퍼스에는 최근 최첨단 학생 레크리에이션 센터, 공학/생명공학 센터, 로스쿨 건물, 미술단지, 기숙사 및 과학시설이 신축되었다.
