세계적인 바이올린-피아노 듀오로 유명한 David Mannes 와 Clara Mannes 가 1916에 설립하였으며, Peter Serkin, Richard Goode, Vladiir Feltsman 등 세계적으로 유명한 음악가로 구성되어 있다. 250명의 재학생이 개별지도를 받으며, 학생과 교수간에 친밀감이 높다. 연간 4~5회의 콘서트를 뉴욕의 심포니 스페이스에서 개최하며 협찬회나 오페라에서 일역을 담당하고 있다. 실내악 협주는 어느 음악도에게나 연주 교습시 거쳐야할 필수과정으로 MCM 은 Percussion Ensemble, Piano Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Baroque Chamber Players, Contemporary Ensemble에서 연주할 수 있는 기회를 갖고 있다. 학교 근처에 링컨센터, 머킨홀, 심포니 스페이스, 자연사 박물관등이 있다. 토플 79점을 요구하나 예술적 재능이 있는 학생에게는 조건부 입학이 가능하다.
