1880년에 설립되었으며 미국 performing arts school 중 최고로 꼽히는 학교중의 하나이다. 전통적인 것부터 최신의 프로그램까지, 실기위주에서부터 이론위주까지 학생들에게 다양하고 광대한 소스를 제공하고 있다. 미시건 학생들은 특히나 재능 있고 그들이 선택한 분야에서 가장 최상의 경쟁력을 유지하고 있다. 약 1050명의 학생들이 있으며, 교수는 150명 정도로 상위 수준의 개인 수업이 이루어지고 있다. 교수진은 학생들이 재능을 최대한 발휘할 수 있도록 환경을 조성하는데 최선을 다하고 있다. 학교의 가장 특징적인 부분은 실기와 학식의 균형을 맞추는데 있다고 할 수 있다.
