1842년에 Edward Sorin 신부가 설립한 노트르담 대학은 인디애나 주 South Bend의 북동부에 인접한 Notre Dame에 위치한 가톨릭계 대학이다. 가톨릭계 대학이라는 특성은 학교의 곳곳에서 나타나는데, 캠퍼스 중심부에는 Basilica of the Sacred Heart 성당이 위치하고 있고 대학본부 건물 상단에는 은총의 동정녀 마리아상이 서 있다. 캠퍼스는 1,250에이커 규모로, 136개 건물로 이루어져 있다.
교내의 4개 단과대학 가운데 가장 큰 곳은 College of Arts and Letters로, 미술, 인문학과 사회과학에 관련된 50개 이상의 전공 및 집중분야에 걸쳐 학위 과정을 제공하며, 전통적인 교양 교육을 현대화하여 제공하는 것으로 정평이 나 있다. 기타 단과대학으로는 과학대학, 공학대학과 경영대학이 있으며, 로스쿨과 건축 전문학교가 설치되어 있다. 신입생은 모두 First Year of Studies 프로그램에 편입되어, 향후 전공을 선택하기 위한 기초를 쌓게 되는데, 학업 상담과 학습 자료실도 제공되어 시간관리, 공동학습, 학습전략교습 등을 돕게 되어 있다. 노르트담의 도서관은 대학 도서관 시스템과 Kresge 법학도서관으로 구분되어 있다. 대학 도서관 본관은 14층 규모의 Theodore M. Hesburgh 도서관인데, 건축, 화학/물리학, 공학, 생명과학과 수학 등의 전문 도서관과 각종 정보센터로 이루어져 있다. 도서관은 총 200만 권의 장서와 250만개의 마이크로필름, 22,600종의 정기간행물을 보유하고 있다. 법학도서관은 장서 324,000권, 마이크로필름 294,000개와 6,200종의 정기간행물을 보유하고 있다. 대학 기숙사는 총 27동으로 각각 자체 채플을 갖추고 있으며, 학부생 가운데 80% 정도가 교내에서 거주하고 있다.
