하버드 대학은 Harvard College를 비롯해서 Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Business School, Design School, Divinity School, School of Education, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Law School과 Schools of Dental Medicine, Medicine and Public Health 등으로 구성되어 있다. Harvard College는 보스턴에서 Charles 강 건너 있는 도시인 메사추세츠주 캠브리지에 위치하고 있다. 보스턴 도시권은 뉴 잉글랜드의 문화와 도시의 활발함이 조화되어 있으며 전통과 혁신이 공존하고 있다.
하버드는 폭넓은 교양 커리큘럼 구조를 갖추고 학생이 자신의 학업 계획을 자유롭게 짤 수 있게 한다. 학생은 4년 동안 인문학, 사회과학과 자연과학 과정에서 제공하는 3,500가지 과정 가운데 32개의 학기단위 과정을 선택해서 이수해야 한다. 신입생은 해설문 과정 1학기를 필수적으로 이수해야 한다. 학생은 1학년을 마칠 때 집중 분야를 선택한다. 이후 3년 동안 해당 분야 및 관련 분야의 최소 12개 과정을 이수하게 된다. 대부분의 2학년생은 선택한 분야에 대한 개인강사를 부여받게 된다. 3, 4학년은 선택적으로 개인교습을 진행할 수 있으며, 최종적으로 졸업논문을 제출하게 된다. 핵심 커리큘럼 과정은 집중 분야 이외의 분야에서 제공되며, 문학과 예술, 역사연구, 사회분석, 도덕적 추론, 과학, 외국문화, 정성적 추론 등의 11개 분야 가운데서 7개 과정을 이수해야 한다. 학생은 이 핵심 프로그램을 통해서 집중 분야 이외의 과목을 이해하게 된다. 학생은 졸업하기 전에 외국어 하나와 데이터 분석에 숙달해야 한다. 신입생은 125가지의 신입생 세미나 중 하나에 참가할 수 있다. 이는 개인 연구를 하거나 소규모 연구를 하려는 신입생을 위한 것으로, 분야에 정통한 교수가 지도하게 된다.

대학도서관 시스템은 Harvard College Library와 대학원 및 전문학교 도서관으로 이루어져 있으며, 총 1,500만권 이상의 장서를 보유한 세계 최대 규모다. 교내 박물관은 Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Botanical Museum, Museum of Comparative Zoology과 Mineralogical Museum이 있다. Fogg 박물관과 Sackler 박물관은 회화, 드로잉과 조각 컬렉션을 보유하고 있다. Carpenter Center for Visual Arts에서는 현대 작품이 정기적으로 전시된다. Loeb Drama Center에는 500석 규모의 공연장이 있고 소규모 실험 극장도 갖추고 있다. 주거는 Harvard 생활에서 필수적인 부분을 차지한다. 모든 학생에게는 대학 숙소가 4년간 보장된다. 신입생은 Harvard Yard에 있는 기숙사에 들어가고, 2학년이 되면 숙사를 다시 배정받아서 학부기간 내내 생활하게 된다. 숙사에는 master라 불리는 교수가 강사등과 함께 상주하며, 도서실과 식당도 설치되어 있다. 숙사는 남녀공용으로, 대학생활의 중추 역할을 한다.
