1850년에 설립되었으며 주립으로 잘 못 알려진 사립대학이다. 로체스터대는 6개의 대학들이 몰려있는 로체스터시내에서 가장 대표적인 명문이며 유학생도 1천명선을 넘어선 외국에도 인지도가 있는 학교이다. 75년 전통의 ESM 은 전문음악대학교으로 종합대학과 같이 다양한 코스를 선택할 수 있으며 2중 학위를 취득할 수 도 있다. 교내 20개 이상의 합주단을 보유하며, Sir Georg Solti, Karel Husa, Paul Sacher, Leonard Sllatkin, Robert Shaw 와 같은 유명 지휘자와 초청공연을 하며 Yo-Yo Ma 와 같은 음악인들이 교습을 맡기도 한다. ESM 학생들의 로마상, 번즈상, ASCAP, BML 등의 수상은 이스트만대학의 교육적 우수성을 나타내기도 한다. 재학생들의 50%가 뉴욕주 출신이며 77%의 백인비율과 1천명 이상의 유학생, 그리고 각 인종이 분포하며 각 인종간의 관계는 매우 원만하다. 거의 전학생에 가까운 재학생의 89%가 기숙사 생활을 하며 기혼자를 위한 별도의 콘도미니엄도 마련하고 있다. 로체스터시는 주변에 대학이 많아 학생들이 즐길만한 시설이 아주 잘되어 있으며 로체스터 대학내에도 각종행사가 열려 거의 모든 학생이 주말에 학교에 머물고 있다.

MA in Composition Prerequisite
  • Composition: A minimum of 18 semester hours or its equivalent in undergraduate courses
  • Theory: 12 semester hours in lower-division courses
  • Counterpoint and orchestration: 12 semester hours in upper-division courses
  • Completion of at least one work in one of the larger forms
   MA in Music Education (Professional Studies)
  • A high standard of musical skill, consistent with an Eastman bachelor’s degree
  • Breadth of musical and general educational preparation
  • Skills in academic writing
  • Teaching experience is strongly recommended
  • This degree may be pursued through full-time study or through summers-only study (in four consecutive summers).
   MA in Musicology
  • Substantial undergraduate coursework in music history and music theory
  • Proficiency in a foreign language (highly recommended)
  • Placement exams in music history and theory, which are taken by all incoming graduate students at the Eastman School

Take Five Scholars Program

The University of Rochester’s Take Five Scholars Program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to acquire a liberal education that might not otherwise be available to them.

FORTE Program

The FORTE (four years plus teaching experience) program is a ninth semester of tuition-free enrollment for selected music education majors at the Eastman School.

Dual Degree

Applicants who wish to obtain both a BM degree from Eastman and a BA or BS degree from the College must complete two separate application processes

Musical Arts Major

The Musical Arts major (MUA) is an honors curriculum that enables students to craft an individualized program of study, undertaken in consultation with a faculty committee and an appointed MUA Mentor and MUA Advisor that leads to a senior project.
