1917년 이래로 재능 있는 음악인을 양성하는 장소로서 세계적인 명성을 얻고 있는 이 학교는 Julliard에 진학하지 못한 유학생들이 몰리는 학교로 입학률은 50% 선에 머물고 있다. 825명의 학생이 등록되어 있으며, 약 48%의 학부과정 비율을 가지고 있다. 이들은 41개주 이상의 주와 30 개이상의 외국에서 오고 있으며 19%의 유색인종과 32%의 국제 학생으로 이루어져 있다. 학생수가 800여명에 불과해 교수들로부터 충분한 지도를 받으며 기타 유명 음대보다도 더 많은 교양강좌를 열고 있으며 학과목 선택의 여지가 풍부하다. 콜럼비아대나 Bernard College 와 상호 학점 인정제도를 도입, 명문대에서의 전공외 타과목 신청 기회를 주고 있으며 타 대학에서 제공 하지 않는 재즈와 상업용 현대음악등을 제공하고 있다. 기숙사는 여유가 없어 대부분 외부에서 통학하고 있으나 대학주변 많은 방들이 있어 거주에는 큰 문제가 없다. 대학전공자 분포는 클래식 80%, 재즈 17%, 나머지는 오케스트라 분야 지망자이며 출신 지역별로는 외국학생 40%, 현지 출신 아시아인 9%, 이중 백인계가 40% 정도 이다. 교수는 총 250명으로 교수 1명당 학생비율은 4명미만이다. 토플 점수가 없는 학생은 맨하탄음대 자체 영어시험 (Institutional TOEFL)을 치루고 기준 점수 이상 획득하며, 토플없이 입학가능하다. 박사학위는 600점 이상 토플을 요구한다. 오디션의 경우, 외국학생은 VHS 비디오테잎을 제출해 면제받을 수 있으나, Composition, Accompanyingdhk 박사학위 지원자는 미국에서 오디션을 받아야 한다. 오디션 기간 동안 학생은 토플점수를 제출해야 한다

MSM no longer requires the TOEFL. All applicants whose first language is not English will take an in-house English Assessment which will be given during our audition week. The English Assessment will cover listening, reading, and writing, as well a brief one-on-one interview with a member of our ESL faculty. The result of your English Assessment will help us determine your English level and potentially inform admissibility.
