1917년 설립되었으며, 교수대 학생의 비가 1:6정도의 소수 정예 교육으로 수업시간 외에도 교수들의 리사이틀 지도를 받거나, 동문들과 콘서트를 개최하기도 한다. 재학중 오케스트라, 오페라, 협주회등에서 공연하거나 학교 외에서도 시포니 오케스트라나 실내악 협주단, 오페라단, 합창단과의 협연을 통해 연주 경험을 넓히고 있다. 졸업생들은 Chicago Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Peabody Trio, Philadelphia Orchestra 등 세계 굴지의 유명 음악 단체에서 활동한다.
